Posted by: SBC Today | Comments (89)

Today we present an interview with Les Puryear, pastor of Lewisville Baptist Church in Lewisville, North Carolina. Les is one of six men who will be nominated to succeed Dr. Frank Page as president of the Southern Baptist Convention at the annual meeting next month in Indianapolis. The other candidates are (in alphabetical order):

  • Frank Cox
  • Wiley Drake
  • Johnny Hunt
  • William Wagner
  • Avery Willis

Tim Rogers conducted this interview in person in Les’s office in Lewisville. The variations you may notice in the volume are the result of some equalization of volume that was necessary.

Tomorrow we plan to post an interview with Pastor Wiley Drake of California. It is our hope that these interviews have been helpful to our readers as we approach this important decision in the life of our convention.

Pastor Johnny HuntToday we have the privilege of bringing you this interview with Pastor Johnny Hunt who recently has announced his willingness to be nominated as a candidate for SBC President when our messengers meet in Indianapolis in June. He will be nominated by Dr. Ted Traylor, pastor of Olive Baptist Church in Pensacola, Florida.

Interview with Dr. Frank Cox

Posted by: Scott Gordon | Comments (186)

imageserverdb.jpegAs has already been reported by Baptist Press, Dr. Frank Cox has announced his willingness to be nominated for consideration as President of the Southern Baptist Convention. Peter Lumpkins had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Cox recently, and it is our privilege to share the audio with you. We here at SBC Today hope that this interview will allow many within our convention who may not know much about Dr. Cox to have the opportunity to get to know him a little better.

Dr. Frank Cox has been the Pastor of North Metro First Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, Georgia, since 1980. A native of Tallahassee, Florida, Dr. Cox is a graduate of Mercer University in Atlanta, earned his Master of Divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and received his Doctor of Ministry from Luther Rice Seminary in Atlanta. Pastor Cox has had the unique privilege of pastoring North Metro First Baptist Church for 27 years.

Pastor Cox has held many positions of leadership including President of the Georgia Baptist Convention and 1st Vice President of the Southern Baptist Convention. He is much sought out speaker who has preached at many Conferences and Universities including the SBC Pastors Conference and Liberty University. In addition to speaking Dr. Cox is a published author of Trusting God’s Heart, the story of sickness and death of his first wife, Debbie, and what God taught him through grief, and how God restored his joy.

Pastor Cox is married to Mary. They have three children: daughter Kristen; sons Stephen (wife, Brooke) and Jonathan. Dr. Cox’s hobbies include reading and travel.

We hope you will be encouraged by what you hear from the heart of this gracious man of God.

Interview with Dr. Jerry Vines

Posted by: Scott Gordon | Comments (41)

Dr. Jerry VinesWe are privileged to bring you today an interview with Dr. Jerry Vines, Pastor Emeritus of First Baptist Church, Jacksonville Florida, and founder of Jerry Vines Ministries. He currently resides in Georgia where, he assures us, he has not taken to riding Harleys (the picture above was used for a special event during his ministry at FBC Jacksonville).

He is a gracious man to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude. His faithfulness to the Lord’s call to minster to His people, to lead his family to honor God, and to share the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those who are lost, is a worthy example for us all to emulate.

In the course of this interview, Dr. Vines shares his thoughts and convictions regarding why he is Southern Baptist, the impact of the current trends of Calvinism in our convention, our response to the challenge of postmodernism, and other issues.

Enjoy!

Interview with Jon Vines

Posted by: Wes Kenney | Comments (18)

jon_chuck.jpgIt’s unclear to most of us at SBC Today whether or not Tim Rogers actually attended any of the sessions of the recent pastor’s conference at First Baptist Church in Jacksonville. It’s possible he spent the entire time recording conversations with people. His loss, our gain.

Today, we present an interview with Jon Vines (pictured here with Chuck Norris*). This fifteen-minute conversation covers topics such as Vine’s suggestions for pastors whose children rebel, and it reveals Tim’s barely-hidden love for professional wrestling. Enjoy.
