Podcast Episode 10: Ed Stetzer Edition

Posted by Wes Kenney

podcast logoWe’re back for another installment of the SBC Today podcast, Ed Stetzer edition. Robin Foster was unexpectedly AWOL for the recording, but the rest of the gang is here, and this week’s podcast is all about Ed Stetzer. Okay, not really, but I have been given to understand that the more times you mention Ed Stetzer in a blog post, the more traffic you can expect (I think I heard that from Ed Stetzer). And Ed Stetzer does figure prominently in this week’s podcast, as it is a point-by-point discussion of Ed Stetzer’s recent post on the Between the Times blog, a post wherein Ed Stetzer shares Ed Stetzer’s suggestions for where we go from here as a convention, and what things Ed Stetzer thinks we need to focus on. We don’t always agree with Ed Stetzer, as you’ll see in the podcast, but Ed Stetzer has his eye on the developing trends in our convention, so it’s certainly worthwhile to take a look at what Ed Stetzer has to say, especially regarding the future of our convention. Sorry fellas, I do not feel the SBC has been trying to reach out to people outside of the South. For the record, I consider the Midwest NOT reaching out. As a native Vermonter what in the world do I have to do with the “Southern” Baptist Convention? Why not change the name to the Christian Baptist Association? Would you not rather have Christ in our name than Southern? I would.

Personally, I favor “LifeStone” or maybe “Guideway” for a new name for the convention. The less it means, the better. Meaning divides; slogans unite.

What about: “F’get About it” Baptist Convention.

Or,

Your OK, I’m OK Baptist Convention

Or,

Free To Interpret Baptist Convention

OR

Universal-Nonlocalist Baptist Convention

It’s a shame the title “Cooperative Baptist” is already taken. Titles like “We Don’t Want Anyone to Know What We Believe Baptist” or “We Don’t Really Care About What We Believe Baptist” are just far too long.

I’m against changing the name simply because the title Southern Baptist means something. People are not offended by the regional title. They are offended by the evangelism and doctrine that the title has come to represent.

As the old argument goes, nobody boycots WESTERN Sizzlin, because of its name. If people stay away, it is only because of the food that is served up.

John Daly,

I agree with Tim’s comments that we have tried to reach outside the Bible belt, but I also think that we should be doing a lot more. I hope one of the changes that will result from the work of the GCR taskforce is to get more of our mission dollars out of the Bible Belt and into lesser reached areas.
