A New Look
Posted byRegular visitors to SBC Today will recognize an entirely new look to the site, the only change we’ve made to the appearance other than a Christmas color scheme and images in 2007. Clearly, it was time for a bit of a refresh. But we had to have some help.
That help came in the person of Cory Miller. Cory has been a friend to many of us in the Baptist blogosphere, and though I’ve never met him personally, he’s helped me out on several occasions. Cory is a fellow Oklahoman, and you can read more about him by clicking here. He has graciously provided this wonderful new theme for us. It’s called “Flexx,” and you can check it out by clicking here. Though we still have some tweaking to do, we’re excited about the new look and grateful to Cory for helping to bring about this needed change.
Speaking of change, it’s also coming to our commenting system. We’ve implemented a WordPress plugin called “Intense Debate,” and this adds some new functionality to our commenting system. I don’t have a complete handle on all of the added capabilities, but perhaps the most useful will be comment threading. This will take some getting used to, but I believe it will ultimately make our comments much more user-friendly. Essentially, what it means is that if you have a comment about the main post itself, you add it to the bottom of the thread as usual. But, if you want to respond directly to something someone else has said in a comment, you can click a “Post Reply” button in that comment, add your thoughts, and they will appear next to the comment to which you are responding. No longer do you have to introduce your reply by referring to a comment number; you can reply and your response will be threaded, appearing next to the comment to which you’ve responded. [UPDATE] It took less than twenty-four hours for me to tire of the complications added by the above-mentioned plugin. I suppose it does what it advertises, but it was just not workable for us. In its newest iteration, WordPress allows for threaded comments, but our new theme does not yet support this feature. So, in the meantime, I’ve found another plugin that gives us only the feature we wanted (comment threading), without all the extras that were just getting in the way. So the comments are now much as they were before, except that you can reply directly to someone’s comment by clicking on “reply” at the bottom of the comment. To reply to the post itself, simply add your comment at the bottom of the list. [/UPDATE]
We hope that these changes will be beneficial to all our readers and commenters, and that they will allow us to focus on debate and discussion of important topics as we seek together for God to be glorified through our lives, our churches, and our convention.

Brother Scott,
Brother CB Scott was at Mic #11 with me which is located at about the place the picture was taken. So, he may have taken it and contributed it to Brother Wes.

Tim,
How have you managed to be "Tim Rogers" in some comments, and "trogers" in others? I'm confused…

I like the new look. I especially like the picture-changing banner!

Thanks, Rick. We're working on getting our name integrated with those images, which is apparently not as easy as it sounds.
On another note, the website that hosts our comments has been down all morning, but it appears to be working now.

Wes
When did we get permission from Ft. Worth to change?
Great look. Thanks for putting the time into this.

Brother Wes,
I have no idea. I still can't figure out the reason my picture is not coming up beside my name.

Wes… in case you weren't aware, Wordpress 2.7 supports threaded comments, so you don't necessarily need to use a third-party site to make things work. Of course, I haven't played around with 2.7 enough to know how to implement it yet, but it is technically possible.

Wes,
Great work on the new look and comment format. I know that picture of the convention wasn't taken by any of us at SBC Today…we had the providential fortune of sitting by mic # 5!

Brother Wes,
I figured out how to get my picture up on my comments. Now if I could just figure out how to stop all of the comments coming to my email box.
Blessings,
Tim

As I understand it, it is something that is theme-related.

I like the new look. The pictures are horribly misleading suggestion that you ARE the SBC.

But Rick, we are. And, last I checked, so are you.

If mic #5 carried with it all the requisite Reformed jabs…you two at mic # 11…hmmmm, somebody's a hyper-Calvinist there!

Wes,
Thanks for the update. I was so confused by the new comment format, I couldn’t make heads or beans of anything and didn’t comment. Oh wait…maybe that’s why you put it in…:)

For what it’s worth, I personally find the threaded comment deal non-user friendly. Whenever new comments are made, I have to search up and down the comment stream to find them, instead of looking at the bottom of the stream, like normal. I see what you are trying to do by grouping answers to specific comments next to the comments they are answering. But, in my honest opinion, I think it muddies things up more than it helps.
Otherwise, your new “look” is very attractive.

David,
Thanks for your kind words. It certainly is a tradeoff, but as we were getting some very long comment sections, with people at comment #120 referring back to something said in comment #8, we just thought this might simplify things a bit. Of course, it does so at the expense of being able to go right to the end to see the latest, but that’s the tradeoff.
In the sidebar under recent comments, a click on the name of the post will take you directly to that recent comment, whether it’s at the end or in the middle somewhere.
Again, thanks for your comment.
