Wow! What a life story for these two Presidents of institutions. What a kick it would be to sit in on that Thanksgiving dinner! Sounds like the students will be the winners.

President Emir...shouldn't that be Emir Emir?

Well, God bless you my brother! May His grace guide you as you lead that institution to bring honor and glory to the name of Christ.

Sola Gratia!

I am not denying that North Georgia is quite beautiful. I have friends in Toccoa - one was a point guard for the Lady Bears. Beauty aside, small schools like Truett-McConnell have always had trouble recruiting students to the "foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains." Young 18-22 Georgia boys and girls tend to prefer the MANY schools in Metro-Atlanta (Cleveland is definitely not going to be considered "Metro-Atlanta" anytime in the foreseeable future, though I have watched as places like Gainesville and Cumming in particular have BOOMED over the past 10 years) Athens, and even Statesboro/Savannah over little small Georgia Baptist colleges. I grew up on the campus of Brewton-Parker College - so I'm familiar with those related struggles. Although while I lived in Georgia, Truett-McConnell always had one advantage that Brewton-Parker never had: A popular extension campus in Athens!

I didn't know that TMC was $20K. If I'm paying $20K, I'm probably going somewhere with a better academic reputation. TMC hasn't been a 4-year institution that long. She's young in that regard. I, like most Georgia graduates, took advantage of the HOPE Scholarship. Free Tuition for 4 years is hard to beat!

So, it's in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Atlanta is moving out that way. It sounds like a great place to live, Big Daddy.

Dr. Caner, if you read this, and you need help with mountain ways and mountain language, food, etiquette, etc.; just holler and I'll let you know these things. One thing, learn to say yall and aint.

Boy, I'd love to see Dr. Caner going out on visitation to some family back in a holler, and him trying to explain that even though he was a Turk, he was not a Muslim, and he was a Christian. And, then, to hear those folks trying to say Emir....lol. Oh boy, Brother, you need me to come and be your interpretor and social liason.

Naw, really, you'll do fine. Have you ever eaten fried rabbit, or duck and dressing, or deer roll ups? Do you like white beans and cornbread? Brother, get ready for some mighty fine eating.

Mr. Weave, I don't know when the last time you were in Cleveland but believe it or not but what was a mountain town has nearly become a suburb of Atlanta. It is just a short commute from Cumming/gainesville to cleveland. The problem is that it costs 20k a year to go there. Georgia Baptists need to concentrate on making their colleges affordable.

The naming of Dr. Caner makes quite a statement to all Southern Baptists - TMC is now a major player. With the combination of the gourgeous setting in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains, the accesability of Atlanta and the GBC Missions and Ministry Center, the visionary leadership of the president and the quality people who serve God on that campus, TMC's size and impact convention wide will soon rival the mountains that surround her.

God bless TMC!

Dr. Caner,

Congratulations to you and your family. This is exciting news for Georgia Baptists. TMC predictably will rise in both academic rigor and student desirability. Indeed, your brother at Liberty must already be squealing like a Georgia BBQ pig. Why? Not because you'll be closer (though I'm sure you both are glad of that). Rather TMC will soon be on track to be LBU's chief competitor for young Georgia students!

When the time is right, I will take a spin up to the beautiful North Georgia mountains and have a coffee with you.

Grace, my brother. With that, I am...

Big Daddy,

I dont think that I've ever been to Cleveland, Georgia. Where is it exactly? and, why is it a bad location?

With Dr. Caner going there, maybe we'll hear great things happening there in the future.

Volfan,

Have you ever been to Cleveland? Georgia Baptist schools like Truett-McConnell and Brewton-Parker have always had recruitment troubles due to location. Financial issues too, though I think TMC got some of that Mercer money. However TMC is better situated than her sister-school - BPC - only 70 miles north of Atlanta.

Too bad TMC sold their Athens/Watkinsville campus a few years or so back to the University System of Georgia. I along with most of my friends enjoyed taking courses there during the summer semesters. Best and easiest place in Athens to go and get an A in a foreign language and Calculus!

Congratulations, Dr. Caner.
