“SBC Perspective”

Posted by Wes Kenney

This post contains the first episode in a new venture for SBC Today. Our goal is to produce a weekly podcast that highlights the issues of the day, spotlights a pastor or other leader in our convention who is doing something unique or innovative in their ministry, and discusses the challenging issues we face as Southern Baptists.

This first episode is around forty minutes in length, which is a bit longer than we would like. This is partly due to some necessary introductions, and partly due to the fact that it is the first episode. We’re learning as we go, and hope to streamline future episodes so that each will last no longer than thirty minutes.

Please use this comment section to offer your suggestions. If there is an issue or topic you’d like to hear us discuss, or if there is someone you know who should be in our spotlight, let us know. We appreciate all our readers and podcast subscribers, and your feedback can help us make “SBC Perspective” a more useful resource for everyone.

You can click below to listen, or you can find us on iTunes by searching “SBC,” or by clicking our podcast link in the sidebar.

I would probably be interested in most issues of the day as they pertain to the SBC but have no interest in blocking out a length of time to listen to anyone’s podcast.

Just my personal preference.

2

William,

Ah, but you haven’t heard our podcast.

No, but seriously, I can’t speak for any of the other guys involved, but as far as Bart Barber goes, here’s the deal.

1. Over the past couple of years I’ve come to love these guys genuinely and deeply. One aspect of our fellowship has been the discussion of current events in the SBC.

2. The production of these podcasts is fun. I’m doing it because it is fun. If nobody listens to it…ever…I’ll still find them fun to do.

3. But they’re fun enough that, in my opinion, some folks will find them valuable to listen to. That may not be you, but it’s a big world out there, and whoever finds value in it, God bless them.

4. Most of us involved have a face made for radio, so this is obviously our destiny! :-)

Thanks for your comment, brother.

Thanks for dropping by to SBC Today. Might I also add to Bart’s comment that the podcast is more than our “opinions.” We will also have interviews with people in the SBC who are doing ministry in ways we feel would be interesting to hear about.

BTW, since this is a podcast, it can be down loaded so that anyone can listen to it at their convenience. Possibly as they are driving in their car to visit someone or as they are working out in the morning (my personal favorite.) So there is really no need to block out any length of time that would challenge anything else that may be on one’s radar.

This podcast is something new we are trying and if one person listens to it, it will be by the grace of God. Frankly, I am surprised, yet humbly blessed, by the number of people who read our posts. Still further, I am blessed that you even responded. Your comment instills in all of us the importance of delivering quality material that glorifies God and builds up the saints. I know we will all strive, with God’s strength, to deliver informative podcasts that will bless the body. Thank you again for commenting.

Bart,

Ditto!

4

Brothers,

I listened to the entire 40 minutes, 36 of which was Bart Barber. The other three was Scott laughing. Did ya’ll interview anybody?

With that, I am…

Peter

Just kidding bros. This venue has great potential. There were a few rough edges but definitely worth pursuing. you guys may have created a new standard to parallel blogging…

The time may be a factor but you already know that. The sound via conference was not exceptional but adequate.

Perhaps you could interview some authors of recent books that are fresh or you could speak to authors of books about to be released…

I’d like to see a segment on a particular aspect of theology or biblical theme/text, with one of our professors as guest. I think that would really be appreciated.

For example, perhaps an archaeologist could tell us what’s hot in the Holy land (besides the temp).

Or perhaps one of our NT professors would address the long ending of Mark or the noted passage in John 8: 1ff.

On another note, last year, I scrambled to find some info on the book ‘Truth in Translation: Accuracy and Bias in English Translations of the New Testament” (University Press of America, 2003) by Professor Jason D. BeDuhn, a reputable scholar at Northern Arizona University. His book is being exploiting big time by Jehovah’s Witnesses. I’ve already dealt with it at home and the coffee shop more than once.

BeDuhn concludes after comparing Watchtowers’ New World Translation with many English translations including NAB, NRSV, NASB and the KJV that “it can be said that the NW [New World Translation] emerges as the most accurate of the translations compared” (p.163).

Now that’s worth talking about. Grace all. With that, i am…

Peter

6

Peter,

*laughing*…*laughing*…*laughing*

:-D

Sola Gratia!

7

Peter,

Seriously… ;-)

Thanks for the input and ideas. I must also echo Bart. This was fun and hopefully will be enjoyed by many.

Bart,

Since ranking seems to be the theme of the day (Les P & Ed S)…would you care to rank the order of the best face for podcasting in our crew?

:-)

Sola Gratia!

I’ll take a shot at the ranking thing:

1. Bart Barber
2. Everybody else

:)

9

William,

I subscribe to a number of podcasts, but I don’t “block out” time to listen to any of them. They’re downloaded to my iPod automatically, and when I’m going somewhere (or when I’m mowing), I catch up on what I’ve missed.

Of course, if you’re without an iPod, I can’t help you… :)

Seriously, thanks for your comment.

10

Wes,

Are we supposed to rank your face NOW, or in the Cowboy Hat photo?

I put down the Wii and decided to listen to the first half of this podcast.

Given Bart’s perspective on the Baylor situation, I thought I’d share with your readers this editorial from Marv Knox of the Baptist Standard. Marv articulates what many close to Baylor have been thinking. Fairness requires that a finger or two be pointed in the direction of the Board of Regents in addition to the Faculty. They are, after all, the seemingly secretive group that ousted both Sloan and Lilley.

CB Scott has hollered loudly that many of the trustees in SBC Life aren’t fit to serve and need to be replaced. Same could be said at Baylor. Baylor, a school that desires to be Tier One, has Regent(s) with only a high school degree. Some say the non-BGCT Regents control the BGCT Regent nominating process. Thus, we have instances where when one Regent’s term is up, his relative or church member gets nominated. And the list goes on. So, one can’t point to the faculty and say: you’re the problem. That’s oversimplifying the issue.

12

Probably a generation gap here. I have an ipod but don’t use it this way and would rather read than listen (saves time).

Best wishes for your podcasts anyway…:)

13

How about a transcript?

14

Jason,

I remember a comedy sketch I once saw in which the announcer said, “If you’d like a transcript of today’s show, simply write down everything we say.”

Short of one of us doing that, I know of no other way to generate a transcript, and it’s not something we had really thought about.

Sorry not to be more helpful.

15

Brother BDW,

How can you say what you said about the Regents when others will tell you the regents acted based on the Faculty Senate vote?

Blessings,
Tim

16

Gentlemen,

This should add a new wrinkle. Sometimes it is good to hear the inflections and hesitations as one explains their viewpoints. It should be fun listening.

Like Peter, I too think it will be a good opportunity to discuss in more detail some of the finer distinctions within the SBC such as:

Is faith completely a gift, and how do the SBC Seminaries stand on the doctrine of faith?
How are ways that SBC churches teach “sanctification” and the believer’s responsibility?
Is the “body of Christ” described in scripture the same as the “church”?

I look forward to the discussions. This will be kind of like the “White Horse Inn”, but with SBC allegiance. Thanks for putting this together.

Blessings,
Chris

The Regents themselves couldn’t pinpoint one specific “thing” that caused the firing of John Lilley. No Regent said: We did this because of the Faculty Senate. Intsead, the Regents cited Lilley for “failing to unite the Baylor family”

As if any President could accomplish such a task! The Regents are just as much and probably more to blame for the continued “disunity” at Baylor University.

Baylor has hired an interim Provost (who will hopefully one day get to drop the interim tag) named Elizabeth Davis who is a member at my church.

Would you consider releasing these podcasts as Mp3s? It would be great to put them on an Mp3 player and listen to them in the car.
