Pastor Wiley Drake is one of the six announced candidates who will be nominated for the office of President of the Southern Baptist Convention when we meet this summer in Indianapolis. Bro. Drake has previously served our convention as Second Vice-President. Baptist Press notes that he currently serves as the pastor of First Southern Baptist Church, in Buena Park, California.
We pray this interview will be a helpful resource as you prepare to vote for the man you feel most qualified to lead our convention into the future God has prepared for us.

No offense to the other candidates, but this is a two-horse race- Johnny Hunt and Frank Cox.

did wiley say his daughter is a licensed southern baptist minister? what does that mean? is she ordained?
Wiley did say precisely that. As to what it means, I do not know. She definitely is not ordained…but the answer to that question was likely the most convoluted of any answer we have received from any of the men we have interviewed.

DouginMemphis: That’s what they said the year Frank Page was elected President. And he is now finishing his second term.
Doug in Memphis,
Actually you should have stated that as follows:
FRANK COX and Johnny Hunt.
:-)
cb
CB,
Indeed, sir, indeed. I get the nod. :-)
Debbie,
OK. We’ll see. Totally different circumstances now.
Scott,
Kudos on the interview.
He said something that struck me. He said that the bible is clear on women in the ministry. “I don’t always agree with it, but it doesn’t matter what I believe”.
What does this mean? I don’t always agree with the bible?

ABC,
I think you and Doug have hit on something. As I stated previously, Bro. Wiley’s answer was so circular and convoluted that I am not certain where you pinned the answer down. He came to the conclusion accurately depicting Scriptural truth, but was less than clear as to his precise position regarding women in ministry, especially as pastors.
CB,
I could accept either one. Both men have revealed a consistent heart for the truth and winning the lost.
Debbie,
Thanks for stopping by.

scott: I thought the answer was clear. He will follow what scripture says. He said several times, it doesn’t matter what his opinion is, it’s what scripture says that matters. I had no trouble understanding him. As for his daughter, Wiley answered honestly and also said that he believes the Bible clearly says that women should not be pastors. He shouldn’t be held accountable for his daughter’s beliefs.
I suppose I will offend some of my best friends on this one.
First of all, I am NOT for women preachers.
Secondly, I am for FRANK COX and his daughter is just now finishing high school and has no intentions of being a preacher.
But I do think that our folks are unfair to criticize Wiley Drake or Avery Willis for their respective daughter’s serving as pastors, if the men themselves do not condone women pastors.
My children are 22 and 19 and are great children. However, if one of them did something drastic such as join a CBF church, vote Democratic, or pull for Auburn, would that be my fault? BTW, those are about the worst three actions I can imagine.
John,
The Auburn part would be. Only poorly discipled children ever do such things.
cb
John,
Let me go on record saying that if your daughter ever, EVER pulls for Auburn, you should step down from the ministry pronto!
As Doug from Memphis finished his truthful declaration;
All the SABANATION responded with an earth shaking, A-MEN!!
Perhaps Bro. Wiley has been listening too closely to the prevarications being heard on the campaign trail this political season.
Who would vote for Johnny Hunt when he told us to ignore the teaching of Scripture.
From the Southern Baptist Geneva
Robert I Masters
Robert,
It is a fact that I support Frank Cox for president and will continue to so.
Yet, for you to say Johnny Hunt has told us to ignore Scripture is just not true. He may not adhere to the same view of specific doctrines as do you or me, for that matter, but he would never tell you or anybody to ignore Scripture.
Frankly, I don’t think any man who is currently a candidate for the position of president of the SBC would say such a thing.
Maybe you are just saying this to get a rise from someone. Well, it really did not work here. I would have said this to you even if Johnny Hunt was my blood oath enemy. And he is not.
What you have said is just simply not true and that is all there is to it.
cb
Robert,
I don’t really have a dog in this hunt. It doesn’t matter to me who wins. I disagree with Pastor Johnny on several matters but I could not imagine him saying what you said that he said.
Could you provide any proof or a link to where he told us to ignore scripture?
Sincerely,
ABClay

I DO NOT WANT THE PRESIDENT OF THE SBC GOING AROUND PROMOTING PRAYING FOR PEOPLE TO DIE BECAUSE THEY DON’T BELIEVE LIKE WE DO. THERE ARE MANY SCRIPTURAL REFERENCES TO SUPPORT MY VIEW, BUT 1 IS SIMPLE DEALING WITH THE TARES AND THE WHEAT MT. 13:29,30. OUR JOB IS TO TRY TO LEAD PEOPLE TO SALVATION, NOT PRAY FOR THEM TO GO TO HELL.
