Perhaps the tithe is never more offensive when it is insisted that all - no matter how poor - should tithe - even if your family needs the money. Concerning this Jesus said:

“All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban”—’ (that is, a gift to God), then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother, making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.” Mark 7:9-13

Ab Clay IT sounds like you think I should continue going to this church. You must assuming I am not going to any church but you are wrong. When the christian church teaches a false doctrine about
tithing and legalism they are assuming the congregation is ignorant. You sound like you do not believe what I am saying. Well you must be part of that congregation which believes what ever the preacher says and does not read the scriptures for
yourself. I see in some of your writings you believe in tithing. Read Dr russell Kelleys book on "SHOULDTHECHURCHTEACHTITHING" or go to his web page and read the truth.Put in your browser to tithe or not to tithe by CBS news and that is Dr, Kelly and myself and the dean of theology school at vandervilt college opposing the doctrine of tithing.

The tithe was meant for the israelis only, under the priests collected and distributed by the levites, and the levites kept 9/10 of the tithes and took 1/10 to the storehouse. After calvery each christian is a priest and can talk directly to god without any middle man.
The churches today want to take the whole tenth and not the tenth of the tenth the priests. The tithe was only farm goods and herds. no others paid tithes, the tentmakers , the carpenters, the judges, the brickmakers, the tax collectors, nor any others, paid tithes in Israeli. When Jesus was crucified there were no more priests or levites to
tithe to. The old law was history. Martin Luther left
the catholic church for the same corruption we see in most of the christian churches today. What a travisty of justice to our lord and savior. I believe these twisters and proverters of Gods word will have a hard time entering heaven unless they repent. If you are christian and true believer than you cannot believe in legalism and the tithe. you cannot have it both ways, either you are a christian or jew. Which is it? The tithe was not meant for the gentiles or christians and was not meant for any one
living outside Israeli. Read your bible and you will discover the same as I have. Please do not let others read it for you. That is the reason the christian churches today for the most part are corrupt.

Charles,

Since you are a learned man of great intelligence, what did the author of Hebrews mean when he wrote:

"And let us be concerned about one another in order to promote love and good works, not staying away from our meetings, as some habitually do, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day drawing near."

Grace and Peace....

Tim G Jesus was saying to the diciples that The pharisees sit in moses seat which says that
Jesus and the diciples were under the old law.
You must be listening to the preachers and tithe twisters and not reading the word. Read below for the whole truth. This is undisputal. The church is twisting the truth to fit mans greed. The new covenant teaches grace and free will giving between
the individual christian and god an and has nothing to do with the preachers, deacons, elders, nor any other except god and the christian. The churches must think the congregation is stupid and cannot read. I have a law degree and can read the bible as well or better than any pastor. I also have the commentaries same as the preachers. I left the church because I can hear all the lies in the world and need not go to church to hear the twisters twist the blessed word of God.

Matthew 23 [Commentary] [Map] KJV

1. Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
2. Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
3. All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
4. For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5. But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6. And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7. And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8. But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
10. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
13. But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
14. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
16. Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17. Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
18. And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
19. Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
20. Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
21. And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
22. And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Brothers,

I made a comment about this in the previous post by Tim G.

It boils down to this. If not tithing is a sin, then church members are required by the authority of the word of God to be rebuked and corrected for not giving their tithe. If they continue not to tithe, after bringing it before the church, they should be removed from the fellowship.

Is that where you want to go with this "law" that is limited by the flesh? Just another reason that I like Romans 8 a whole lot.

Grace and Peace to y'all...

When dealing with Jewish believers insisting on Gentile Christian keeping the Law, the elders at Jerusalem laid on the Gentile Christians only these things: Abstain from sexual immorality, abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, and abstain from blood. No mention of the tithe. When Paul writes numerous letters to Christian churches on how to "do" church, he never mentions the tithe.

If you want to talk about the tithe as a stewardship principle, I'm with you. But if 11% is a tithe plus offering and 9% is sin, then I think you have exceeded what the bible says or implies. Give cheerfully, without obligation.

I know of people who will default on their bills to pay their tithe. That, in my opinion, is sin.
