Beauty and the Beast Series–Part 1

Posted by Tim Rogers

hariette-petersen-2.jpgHariette Petersen(much better known as SelahV in the blogosphere) is a Southern Baptist minister’s wife from Lawton, Oklahoma. She is an accomplished freelance writer, with works published since 1982 in Decision Magazine, Home Life, Living with Children, Living With Teenagers, Sunshine Magazine, Upper Room, Daily Meditation, The Western Recorder, Dayspring Greeting Cards, The Crier, and others. She also published and edited a conservative Christian newspaper in Owensboro, Kentucky. SelahV has been a Southern Baptist since age seven. Her “life verses” are Proverbs 3:5-6 and Galatians 2:20. She has been blogging at “SelahV Today” since August 2006. Her hobbies include decorating, gardening, and anything that includes her seven grandchildren!

Today we begin a four part series between Mrs. Hariette Petersen and myself as we think out loud about the SBC Presidency. You will find Mrs. Petersen over at SBC Impact where she is responsible for their devotional page and also an occasional contributor. Her personal blog Selah V Today is one of devotional thought and theological insight. I will interact with Sister Hariette in a follow-up article that will be published here a couple of days after her article. Feel free to give us your insight and thoughts concerning the presidency. As you can tell we have been very careful to stay away from personalities. We ask that those who comment here be very careful not to call names and attack personalities. So far there are three announced candidates for the Presidency: Dr. Frank Cox, Rev. Wiley Drake, and Dr. Bill Wagner.

Enjoy the series.

This is the first of a four-part series on what I consider “Critical Criteria Characteristics for the SBC Presidency”.

I’ve been reading news reports and blog opinions regarding nominees for the position of convention president. I’ve perused the comment streams. I don’t know these nominees, but I do know what I think are characteristics of an individual who would encourage me to lift my ballot in the air and which would cause me to keep my ballot in my lap.

If I were to be in Indianapolis in June for the Southern Baptist Convention and had the privilege to vote for a nominated man of God to lead the SBC, I have certain things that would aid me in my decision.

I have stated before on some of my blogs that an opinion only has the power another person receiving it allows. If it is palatable to you, please remember, it might be because you own some of the same properties within your own viewpoint that makes mine appetizing at the least, and edible at the most. For some it may not even warrant a smell, let alone a taste.

That said, there are some characteristics which clearly define. to me, what can and cannot be part of the character, lifestyle, or allegiances of my choice for SBC President.

Firstly, I think this man must be above reproach. History is important.

I would vote for a nominee whose persona is filled with a history of producing unity, by either word, deed, or interaction with others within his church, his association, his state or the SBC. I’d think very highly of someone who encourages the same in the lives of other Southern Baptists. A history plagued with negativity immediately causes the hair to rise on the back of my neck in protective awareness.

My opinion is based solely upon my view of what I see in the fruit of a nominee’s own words. What that nominee’s words provoke, stir up, and produce in other Southern Baptists is germane. What he stimulates and produces in me is germane. Anything I find detrimental to producing harmony or love for one another would be suspect to future fissures and fractures. Rhetoric–no matter how carefully worded that subliminally orchestrates a symphony playing the tune of Wherever I Lead, You Must Go, will eliminate any possibility of seeing my ballot wave in the air.

He must love the brethren. Any nominee who has a history of pitting one group against another group, or one brother or sister against another brother or sister (either publicly, privately, written or unwritten, documented, or in a court of law) violates (in my opinion) one of the tenets of love which I hold dear from 1 Corinthians 13:5. “It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly. Love (God’s love in us) does not insist on its own way, for it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong].”

He must be verifiably trustworthy–a man who can keep confidences. His previous actions should emulate a man who seeks to do no harm and builds upon the strengths of others. If a nominee is a man of discretion, he will be discreet in how he handles situations which could breach confidentiality. Does his history exemplify discretion? If not, should I believe history will repeat itself?

He must respect the Convention and her mission. If a nominee fails to respect the procedures and guidelines already set in place within the convention, could I trust him to work within the parameters of his elected position as President? Could I expect him to cooperate with the multitude of personalities, pastors, churches and entities within our beloved convention? If a nominee is in continual conflict with his colleagues, could I trust his ability to choose, guide and lead yoke-men and women to cooperate in all entities within our diverse convention?

I would like to know a bit about his history in working with other Southern Baptists in other leadership positions. Did he cooperate or instigate? Did he build consensus or divide to conquer? Did he stay the course or change it with little regard to others?

This is a lot to consider in all the nominees set before us thus far. “Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth! For the Lord has spoken…Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” selahV

Granny SelahV,

I think your article brings out the Godly qualities we would like of those that lead churches and organizations. You might catch a little flack in the second and third paragraph from the end.

No doubt, the leader must be able to cooperate! That will take a gifted and a skilled individual.

Thank you for this and the upcoming articles….

Blessings,
Chris

3

Volfan~ So glad I brightened your day.

Chris~ My anti-spam word is “hope”. I can only hope the operative word in your “flack” sentence will be “might”. :) selahV

To those who are more informed than I am.

What powers does the SBC President truly have? Is it more of a “visional” position? (is that even a word)

I can appreciate your words of wisdom Selah. This is not flak but I was wondering, does the second paragraph from the bottom exclude those who have not historically participated in the “politics” of the convention?

5

ABClay,

The president appoints the members of the committee that appoints the members of the boards of the SBC’s institutions. Presidential elections in the 1980’s and 90’s brought about the conservative resurgence through this process, so there truly is an element of real power.

In my opinion, though, there is not much power in the position at this point in time apart from the “visional” aspect since no one is trying to turn the convention away from its present direction. But it could become an important position again in the future under certain circumstances, like if a witch hunt for Calvinists starts up.

6

Hello ABClay, Thanks for your gracious words. I’m not sure I understand your question. Could you give me an example? selahV

7

Thank you, Selah V, you have described the man we need.
Having been following SBC elections for a generation, I really believe that we have the real deal, the total package in Frank Cox.
This week, I heard him preach at the Alabama Baptist Evangelism Conference. Frank is passionate, personable, sound in doctrine, and thoroughly Southern Baptist.

8

Thanks John, I hope as the series progresses you see other characteristics you can embrace. selahV

9

SelahV,

Sorry for the confusion.

It seems as if you say that you would want somebody who is well known. You would want to know about his “history in working with other Southern Baptists in other leadership positions”. I can understand the reasoning for this and I can’t say that I disagree with you…just wandering your position as alot of the blogs that I read want somebody who is not “establishment” stamped.

Dan,

Thanks for the explanation. Helpful you are.

U get your broom serviced lately?

ABClay

Side Note: Anybody else going out to the Shepherd’s Conference Next Week?

10

Dear ABC…what I’m saying is that whoever is nominated, I’d like to know how he has dealt with people within the SBC period, church brethren. I would think that anyone nominated would have to be known somewhere to someone within the Convention.

And I’d like to know a bit about their background and how they deal with people in respect to the criteria I addressed as well as he sees his role in supporting the work within the parameters of established guidelines and policies. Wouldn’t you? If you were chosen as a messenger from your church? selahV

For ALL, Tim’s mother is having a really rough time and he is at her side. At this writing he has contacted me to ask that I pray for her because they have found grey matter on her brain and she is seeing people who aren’t there. Tim drove 3 hours to Raleigh to be with her tonight. He will be staying at her side through the night. selahV

12

SelahV,

LOL, Calm down, I said that I agreed with you. I recognized your reasoning as I was posting my last comment; I just didn’t clarify and retract my question as I should have.

Will be praying for Tim and family for peace (my anti spam word).

ABClay

13

ABC…how funny! :) I just was trying to answer your question. LOL. no heat rolling from my ears here, I assure you. I saw where you agreed with the alleged wisdom—but was trying to understand your question. I assumed you still wanted an answer. my bad. selahV

14

Selah:

Well said!

You would have my vote should you choose to run.

Blessings,

15

Thanks Jack, but I don’t fit my criteria. selahV

16

DAY SPRING greeting cards?

So, the truth is out. SelahV is a sissy. :-)

17

I don’t disagree with any of that. But isn’t it important that he also be a fan of the Yankees?

18

Dave,

Are you suggesting that being regenerate is not a requirement for you?

;-)

19

Wes, there are none so blind as those who will not see!

20

and Boston Red Sox fans.

21

anyone who likes the yankees…well, they aint right.

:)

selah, here’s one for your dayspring cards. this would be from a husband to his wife…maybe a valentines day card….

Honey, I love you more than a hawg loves cold mud on a hot, July day. I love you more than a hungry dawg loves to be fed leftover roast and gravy. I love you more than a bee loves the sweet nectar of a fresh bloomed flower on a beautiful day in May. I love you more than a woman loves for her hair to be wavy.

I love you from the bottom of toes to the top of my head,

(sign your name here)

you think that one would be a hit? would you pitch that one to your dayspring people?

david :)

22

Goodness, goodness. That’s my spam-word. You fellas are having too much fun.

CB~~yeah…I’m a real pansy kinda sissy. :)

Dave~~The President’s sports preferences are non-essentials in the criticcal criteria characteristics. :) In my biased opinion.

Volfie~~sorry…you might seek another publisher. perhaps if you study the Dayspring line, you can come up with something a bit more suitable. :)

selahV

23

Dave Miller,

While I consider Wes and David to be friends I must say that you are onto something…

Yankees Win! Thaaaaaa Yankees Win!

Sola Gratia!

24

scott,

you aint right, either. :)

you’ll never hear, “go yankees” coming out of my mouth.

solus Christus,

david

If anyone is still reading this, I am proud to say that I completely hijacked the whole comment stream.
