USA Today on Religious Blogging
Posted byUSA Today has done an article covering the topic of blogs in religious circles. I think the article was fair in describing the blog situation in the SBC. One notable exception is that we are not a counter blog to the Outpost. The idea for SBC Today was in discussion since March of this year. Wes, Tim, Joe, and I decided to run with it and on September 10th we officially launched the site. Our desire is to be a resource for all Baptists to use and understand better the rich theological heritage that has been passed to us. We are not journalists, just pastors who want to build up other pastors and lay people.
If you will notice, snapshots of SBC Outpost and SBC Today are given in the sidebar. One thing we have tried to do at SBC Today is to hold down the “shock and awe” factor. When asked how our site was different from Outpost, Wes was quoted as saying that we are, “less bitter than Outpost.”
So, I am thinking we should come up with a new by line in our header which would read, “Great Theology, Less Bitter.” What do you think?

wow! wes is being quoted in usa today. the big time! you will notice that wes was not quoted in usa today until after he admitted to crying like a woman about the movie casablanca. i believe that this has endeared wes to the hearts of women everywhere…including this news reporter for usa today.
robin, i like the “more doctrine, less bitter” theme. it has a good ring to it.

David,
You know better than that. I never admitted to crying like a woman. I call on you to repent of that accusation, and await your public apology.
My exact words were, “I cry like a schoolgirl.”

nancy(wes),
i apologize for calling you a woman, nancy. i’ll bet you and ben are getting real tight now that yall are both famous newspaper quotees. how come i never get quoted? what do you think?
wes, just kidding about the nancy thing. i too cry over good movies…depending of course on how good it is. some really get me.
of course, as the old country song goes…if a woman didnt cry when ole yeller died then you shouldnt miss a woman like that when she’s gone.

I don’t know if I like the decidedly beerward trend this conversation was taking. Thank God you repented in time.
Seriously though, I have to wonder if maybe blogging every detail of SBC life is something akin to airing our dirty laundry in public. Any thoughts?

Well, my better-half (pun intended) always tells me it is better to eliminate the bitter, rather than accentuate it. “Seeking the Best for the Better” would be my suggestion for a new headliner.

The problem I have with blogs that tout the SBC is that I am SBC – but old school – and not too many whipper snappers out there blowing horn for todays seminaries remember what that old school was like. Therefore your blogs mean nothing to us except perhaps perhaps to be a source of contention. You say you want unity, but when I ask questions – legitimate questions as I did on Nathan Finn’s blog a while back he chastised me and refused to answer me.
I ask you, what is your REAL purpose for this blog? How will you handle differing points of views. Will you posit Fundamentalism in you posts or will you be responsible enough to say, “this is an opinion and I not God or Paul say so.” ? I want to be part of this faith dialogue and feel I have a tremendous amount to offer, but what good, what edification can come from a dialogue that starts with censure?

Tim
We invite you comment. We do have our policies, but we have also respected differing opinions. The posts are up for you to investigate.
Second, SBC Today had nothing to do with the censure. You might think that we have that kind of political sway, but you’re talking to four pastors who do not serve in churches that carry that kind of influence.
What do you mean by old school? The reason why I ask is if you listen to Dr. Setzer’s interview, he described a little bit of what old school represented when he attended Southern. So, what exactly do you mean?
Looking forward to discussing the issues with you.

I thought the About page was a pretty good intro to what you all are doing here on this blog. It’s pretty similar to what most other folks do with blogs. You write about what important to you. May not matter much to others and it may tick them off–welcome to America.
