Interview with Dr. Albert Mohler
Posted by Wes Kenney | November 13, 2007
Robin Foster and I, along with blogger, pastor, and fellow Okie Scott Gordon, sat down this afternoon with Dr. Albert Mohler, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Mohler was in Oklahoma for the Pastor’s Conference preceding the 101st Annual Meeting of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, and was gracious enough to spend a few minutes talking with us.
We covered a variety of topics in the limited time we had, from his recent health issues to what he does to relax. He talked about supposed conflicts between the Baptist Faith & Message and the Abstract of Principles, and addressed the adoption of an anti-Calvinism statement by an Oklahoma association (Click here for the details).
We also visited this morning with Dr. Danny Akin of Southeastern Seminary, and we’ll post that audio in a couple of days. We appreciate Dr. Mohler making time for us today. Click below to listen to the interview, which was recorded using the second-best digital audio recorder Wal-Mart has to offer.

Great interview. Is there any way that you can make these available for download as well in the future?

Worship Leader Ron,
I’ve changed the layout of the interview page to allow for downloading of the .mp3 files.

A couple of things in Mohler’s interview that were probably compelling statements for most Baptist’s was his position on how you build a Seminary, and his statement that all Baptist’s are Calvinist’s in some way. I thought the comments were very forthright and telling of his command of leadership.
His statement that a Seminary is only as strong as what the professor’s actually believe is so very true. The lack of true contextual and intrinsic biblical understanding by seminary professors in the past proved detrimental for the Baptist pastors spawned from the bulk of the seminaries from the 60’s through the 90’s. I am excited to see Mohler and a few others beginning to understand and act upon the belief structure in the men that they hire. This is wonderful and I hope it continues and spreads.
The other comment intimating that all Baptists are really Calvinist, all be it in some minimal format, was cute. This is truer than many would admit, but it will be interesting to see how this meets with up with 40-50 years of poor seminary trainees. I still am fascinated how men that endured such poor seminary roots, continue to have a zeal for the Gospel. I am confident that the fascination is nothing but the grace of our great Savior and Lord.
Just some thoughts,
Blessings,
Chris

I’ve read both the Abstract of Principles from Southern Seminary and several versions of the BF&M and, while they’re not completely incompatible, it would be hard to say there are not discrepancies. Especially in the way they both handle the concept of sin, the discussion of God, and Man.
Thanks for the resources.
